No More Driving While on the Phone in Virginia
March 2020
According to recent statistics, accidents from using phones while behind the wheel are on the rise. For this reason, many governmental bodies are pushing legislation to finally forbid drivers from using their mobile devices while on the road.
Governor Ralph Northam has been very vocal in supporting House Bill 874, concerning the prohibition of handheld cellphones while driving. The measure is poised to be implemented at the beginning of 2021, and it will hopefully contribute to increasing road safety across the state, as well as raising awareness on the issue of drivers using mobile phones on a national level. Violators will be fined $125 for their first offense, with fines going up in case of repeated offenses, which will set them back $250 each. People using their phones while in a highway work zone will be fined $250. The hands-free driver is a possibility, and it offers a much safer experience for anyone on the road.
Another bill known as senate bill 932 is aiming to add school zones to the areas in which using a phone while driving would be prohibited, but it has failed to make it past the House subcommittee as of yet.
