Over 50 People Injured in 69 Vehicle Pileup on Virginia Highway
It’s the holidays, and if there’s one thing that is certain, it’s that millions of people will be travelling. This means double the usual traffic on major highways and a higher risk of accidents occurring. One of the major causes of car accidents during this period is the dangerous travel conditions often caused by dense fog and icy roadways. For instance, over 50 people were recently injured in a 69-vehicle pileup on Virginia Interstate caused by heavy fog and an ice-slickened highway. The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 near Williamsburg, Virginia, before 8 a.m, and left two people in critical condition.
While the cause of the initial accident remains a mystery, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya presumes that the icy road conditions and heavy fog are causative factors that contributed to the vehicle pile-up. Following this tragedy, another multi-vehicle crash occurred in the eastbound lanes, near the Queens Creek Bridge, northeast of downtown Williamsburg. This led to the state police closing the entire freeway for a few hours. Fortunately, there have been no confirmed fatalities, despite the large number of injured persons.
Meanwhile, 27 state troopers have reportedly been deployed to the crash scene to investigate and determine the initial cause of the accident, but this could take several days to decipher. And what this means for many of the injured victims is that, without evidence of the initial cause of the accident, they can’t make a case, and getting the compensation they deserve could be delayed. Getting a personal injury attorney right away is the best decision any of them can make at this point.
