Virginia Beach Man Was Drinking and Playing Pokémon Go When Crashes Occurred
A Virginia Beach, VA judge is calling the case involving 48-year-old Paul James Williams one of the most egregious DUI cases he has ever heard. This same judge sentenced Mr. Williams to six years in prison for a series of car crashes in 2016. During these crashes, Paul Williams hit a sixteen year old girl all because he was drinking and playing Pokémon Go behind the wheel. The series of accidents started with the driver rear-ending a vehicle and then continuing to plow through traffic.
After he hopped the median, Mr. Williams began driving the wrong way down Holland Road in Virginia Beach, VA. He then straddled the median of the road and veered onto a sidewalk where he hit a sixteen year old girl. Once he was stopped, police officers determined his BAC was nearly four times the legal limit. Not only was he under the influence of alcohol, to make it worse he was playing a video game while behind the wheel.
Distracted Driving Accidents Are All Too Common
Nearly 20% of all Virginia drivers polled admit to driving while distracted. While the case of Paul James Williams is very rare, distracted driving is a lot more common than you may realize. Trying to answer a text or phone call while driving can create some very unsafe conditions. The last thing you want is to cause another person injury due to negligence. The best way to keep these temptations away while driving is by putting your phone out of reach. By doing this, you will be able to focus solely on the road ahead of you.
What If You Are the Victim of a Distracted Driver?
Just because you take precautions to avoid distracted driving doesn’t mean other motorists on the road do. What if you are on the receiving end of another driver’s negligent actions? Being involved in a car accident can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle and your body. If you are not at fault for the damage done, then you will need to seek out some help from a lawyer regarding compensation. The last thing you want to do is wait too long to file a lawsuit due to the statutes of limitations that exist. Once the dust has settled from your accident, you need to contact a lawyer.
What Can a Car Accident Lawyer Do For You?
You may be wondering, what can a car accident lawyer do for you? One of the most important things they can do is put a price tag on the injuries you have sustained. Once they have this information, they will be able to file a claim or a suit on your behalf. Trying to negotiate with insurance companies without the help of a lawyer will usually end in you being under compensated.
